The television series traces its roots to EC Comics, the publisher behind Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear in the early 1950s. These comics, known for their twist endings and macabre humor, were curtailed amid the moral panic that produced the Comics Code Authority.
